Halloween Family Movies That You Need To Watch

Wednesday 24th October 2018 – Day 24 of Blogtober

What’s Halloween without a Halloween themed movie night complete with snacks and movies from the watchlist?

Alex and I both aren’t into scary movies. I’m not a fan of gruesome, I don’t like thrillers and I’m not a fan of the sleepless nights that come with it! Alex doesn’t like them either, he finds them boring. We used to try and watch scary movies and he’d fall asleep within ten minutes and leave me sitting bolt upright with a pillow over my face.

But, I do love a good Halloween themed movie night, complete with the best Halloween Family Movies. If you haven’t watched them before, add them to your watchlist. Or, if you’re looking for inspiration of family films to watch and need the names to jog your memory, you’re welcome!

Coco

Could I say that this might be my favourite Halloween movie ever? Okay, not quite Halloween, instead it’s about Dia de Muertos, which I’ll be writing about on my blog very soon. Either way, it’s set on October 31st and it’s a truly beautiful film. In fact, don’t read any further, just go watch it now.

Hocus-Pocus

If you haven’t watched Hocus-Pocus you haven’t yet celebrated Halloween. It’s the pinnacle of Halloween. It’s iconic. Salem, witches, spells, Disney, Sarah Jessica Parker. It’s synonymous with Halloween. It is Halloween.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

1993 was a solid year for Halloween movies. Jack Skellington is the King of Halloweentown but discovers Christmastown. He then tries to bring Christmas to Halloween and yes it’s as good as it sounds.

Halloweentown

A Disney TV movie from the late 90’s. A witch has to save the town from other supernatural creatures.

Double Double Toil and Trouble

If you have a daughter, please introduce her to the iconic duo that is Mary-Kate and Ashley. This is making me want to binge all of the films, I mean, When in Rome, Winning London, The Challenge, Our Lips are Sealed. All iconic. Another 1993 favourite, Double Double Toil and Trouble is set on Halloween when two girls try to save their parents from their aunt. Expect spells and strange friends!

The Addams Family

Who is already singing the theme tune? da da da dun. dun dun. da da da dun. dun dun.  No, just me? Wednesday Addams is a true queen of our generation. Uncle Fester has been missing, but when he returns, things aren’t what they seem. The fortune of the Addams Family is under threat. Expect lots of laughs!

The Witches

I remember reading this Roald Dahl classic at school and absolutely loving it. It was one of the books that got me into Roald Dahl. Made into a film in 1990, the young boy stumbles across a witch convention whilst on his holiday. He has to try and stop them, even if he is a mouse!

Monsters vs Aliens

Okay, anything slightly related to monsters or aliens or zombies or witches classes as Halloween’esque to me. This 2009 Dreamworks Animation starring Reese Witherspoon features a woman who changes to a giant and becomes part of a team of monsters in an effort to defeat the alien mastermind trying to take over Earth.

Beetlejuice

Directed by Tim Burton, so you know it’s going to be iconic for Halloween. Alec Baldwin stars in this 1988 classic where a completely normal married couple aim to drive an obnoxious family out of their home. Oh, and the married couple are dead.

ET

Yes, now is the perfect time to rewatch ET. Who else wants an ET? He’s so cute, I need one. This Steven Spielberg classic is perfect for a Halloween movie night.

Harry Potter

Halloween is a perfect time to get a Harry Potter Marathon on the go. Ghost and ghouls, spells and spooky music, demons and dementors. Harry Potter has everything to fulfil a Family Friendly Halloween Movie Night.

Corpse Bride

Shall we just crown Tim Burton king of Halloween and be done with it? Set in the 1800’s in a Victorian Village, a shy groom practises his wedding vows in front a deceased young woman, she rises from the grave assuming they are now married.

Coraline

This eerie family-friendly movie features a young girl, Coraline. After she moves into her home she comes across a hidden door, which leads to a parallel world, where all her dreams come true. Can it be too good to be true?

Ghostbusters

Who you gonna call…? The Ghostbusters are called upon to save The Big Apple. Can they do it?

Hotel Transylvania

Starring Adam Sandler, Dracula builds a resort in Transylvania but becomes a little too overprotective when a boy stumbles across the resorts and falls for his teenage daughter. Even though it stars Dracula, Frankenstein and others, this 2012 film is a U, so it’s completely family friendly!

There you have it, 15 (more if you count all of the Harry Potters!) family-friendly Halloween movies to keep you going through the Halloween Period!

Hasta luego,
