The special measures during the Christmas period have been released by the Valencian government and it’s now been clarified what we can and can’t do over the festive season.
As cases continue to drop, with the R number being halved over the past month, things are starting to look up in not only the Comunidad Valenciana but across the entire country. We’ve been having some of the lowest rates since the start of the second wave and generally things are starting to pick up. It’s evident that closing the land borders to prevent travel has played a key part in that.
Restriction of Movement
The restriction of movement in and out of the Valencian community has been extended until 15th January 2021, except on the following dates 23rd, 24th, 25th and 31st of December 2020 and 1st January 2021. It is only permitted to leave the Valencian community or enter the valencian community for the exceptions already in place or to take trips to be with family or close friends in their homes in a different community.
Flights are still operating to Alicante and Valencia airport. You must provide a negative PCR test no older than 72 hours and complete a compulsory QR code which provides details of your stay in Spain and your recent medical history.
For a while now, the nighttime curfew has been in place across the entire country. Many places across Spain have much earlier curfews than the Valencia community. We also remained one of the only communities to be able to keep our hospitality open throughout the second wave. This is due to the very low number of cases that were in our community. However, it was compulsory for the entire country to enforce a nighttime curfew therefore our government enforced the weakest curfew. The minimum was 00:00-6:00 and that is the curfew that they enforced.
The curfew from midnight until 6am everyday has been extended until January 15th 2021. However, for Christmas there have been some extensions of the curfew.
On the 24th, 25th and 31st of December 2020 and 1st January 2021, the curfew will begin at 1:30am until 6am to allow people to travel home but also celebrate the New Year with close family or friends.
Some events are allowed to take place but they must be properly organised with correct covid 19 measures. There are many bars and restaurants that are hosting Christmas galas and parties as well as booking live music for guests to enjoy whilst eating their dinners.
One of the biggest events to take place this year is at the Julio Iglesias Auditorium where Benidorm Town Hall have put on a variety of events including Disney sing alongs, orchestra performances, live music and Christmas shows. Most of these shows are geared up for young children. Entrance tickets are between 3€ and 9€ and must be booked in advance.
In the Valencian Community, we can only form groups of 6 people. This includes in other people’s homes and at bars and restaurants. However, over the Christmas period on the following dates: 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st of December 2020 and 1st January 2021, the social gatherings with family and friends is increased to a maximum of 10 people.
Christmas in Benidorm is going to be very different this year, but it’s great to see that there’s a glimmer of hope for 2021. It is such a shame that we won’t have the fair and the ice skating rink and big parties that the town hall usually puts together but on the positive side, things are picking up and getting better which is uplifting to see. With the reopening of nightlife until midnight too, there’s hope for more pubs and clubs to be able to get back to business and providing people with great live entertainment.
